Wood production has a long-standing tradition in the Austrian Mur Valley, and in 2020, the Pabst family celebrated the 80th anniversary of their sawmill. We interviewed their family members and key workers, international clients and partners, and collected some of the memorable stories from the last eight decades.
These interviews form a large part of this magazine. The names and faces featured represent the many woodworkers, family members, innovators and forward thinkers who’ve changed and developed the course of the company. Loose letters gliding over the double pages, with alternating portrait and landscape shots, are the magazine’s common thread.
Working with wood is one of the most sustainable professions, as spruce trees are only ready to be cut when they are 120 years old. For the cover, uncoated and recycled white paper has been used. The title of “Pabst ist 80” is embossed in tree rings, and the colour palette ranges from white, through beige to green – earthy colours for a business that’s so close to nature. The flip-book in the lower righthand corner references the growing process of a tree, the raw material Pabst Holz uses on a daily basis.
